The standard event toilet
As many of us know the horror of porta-loos can be one of the real down sides of a festival or large public event. I don’t think I need to go into details on this point, we have all been there.
A whole new system
Loo Watt have invented a toilet system that does not only smells fine (it’s hard to believe!), but the waste gets turned into electricity, through anaerobic digestion, rather than being a problem to dispose of. It works by having a biodegrade film inside the toilet bowl, on a continuous loop, so when you “flush” the film goes down into the system and takes your waste with it. Leaving no smell or mess for the next person. The cartridges in the bottom of the units do not need emptying until they are full, as it does not smell, even in hot weather!
More than just festival toilets
As well as all of this they are working with communities in Madagascar to bring safe, clean toilets to communities that don’t have them. Especially important for women, who are most vulnerable from a lack of toilets. With the added bonus of providing clean energy and fertiliser.
Payment options
You can buy a wristband to use the facilities as much as you like for the whole festival or a pay as you go system. Well worth it as far as I am concerned.
Check out their website to see which festivals Loo Watt are visiting this summer. Or if you are involved in events why not see if you can hire them, your guests will thank you! Hopefully this is the future of festival toilets.

Very informative post! Absolutely wonderful that the waste gets turned into something so useful! Fingers crossed Loo Watt will be visiting a festival I am attending this summer!
